FICA at ERUV: Door restoration workshop

In partnership with Casa do Povo, FICA held a workshop on restoring the leaves of the glass doors at the entrance to the house, led by woodworker Toninho Urias and his daughter, Juliana Santos. The workshop took place on August 12, during ERUV - an event that involves a cultural program with various artistic and cultural activities.

And you may be wondering: what exactly is ERUV? It's a Jewish tradition that consists of delimiting a public space to allow actions that are considered restricted during Shabbat, such as transporting objects between houses. This tradition has a very special symbolic meaning, as the public space takes on a communal dimension.

The workshop was part of Zeladoria Ativa, a project we inaugurated last month, and was an opportunity to learn restoration techniques from experienced professionals and contribute to the conservation of one of Casa do Povo's historical assets. Participants learned how to dismantle an old door hinge; carefully remove the paint to identify the layers and different colors over time; remove the baguettes that hold the glass; store and identify the pieces... all the way to the steps that will be taken to restore the doors!

The activity lasted eight hours. There were 15 people present, including those who were present throughout the whole process and others who were only there to sand the doors.
